RESUMO

Diprosopus is a congenital anomaly in which partial or complete duplication of craniofacial structures occurs. Because it is rare, the mortality rate is high, and information concerning this anomaly is scarce. This study describes a case of human diprosopus in a 9-year-old male individual, who has severe complications associated with the central nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems. Since birth, he has been monitored in a specialized hospital environment, where he has undergone several surgeries and multidisciplinary treatments. Regarding the craniofacial aspects, he had agenesis of the corpus callosum, floor of the nasal cavity, and floor of the anterior cranial fossa, in addition to the presence of bone dysplasia, ocular hypertelorism and cleft palate with nasal and oral teratoma. Regarding dental characteristics, the patient has duplication of the maxilla, mandible, tongue, and some teeth. After complementary imaging exams, several supernumerary teeth were found, with some being impacted and in complex regions, with an indication for extraction due to the risks of impaction, irruptive deviation, root resorption, and associated cystic or tumoral lesions. Because of the numerous complications, knowledge, and preparation of the entire team is necessary for the correct management of the case.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To guide professionals about the criteria for replacing amalgam restorations and inform them about the new guidelines regarding the use/indication of this (amalgam) material after the Minamata Convention - COP-4. Material and Methods: The articles were selected from the databases (PubMed, Scielo, Bireme), and relevant articles on the subject between the years 2003-2021 were selected. Recently, social media have been flooded with dental treatments that aim to perform restorations only with composite resins or other types of esthetic material and completely replace all dental amalgam restorations, irrespective of their time in place, size, and functionality. Results: Although improperly, it has been noted that this information reaches patients, and they are led to believe in the inaccurate data that is passed on, such as, for example, (that amalgam leads to) permanent contamination by mercury, causing systemic problems and the loss of the tooth. Conclusion: The "phase down" of amalgam in research and teaching has previously been observed in several countries worldwide; however, its use is still necessary given particular circumstances, which, theoretically, make it a material with exact indication.

Background: Mini-implants are devices used to provide absolute and temporary anchorage for tooth movement. Objectives: The present study was carried out to compare the use of periapical radiographs and computed tomography (CT) for planning mini-implants performed by orthodontists. Material and Methods: Five radiographs and five CT scans of premolars and molars regions. These were analyzed by ten Orthodontists. Initially (T1), the evaluators indicated the preferred location for the insertion of a mini-implant, as well as the diameter and length of the device, using only a periapical radiograph. After 30 days (T2), the same evaluation was performed. Sixty days later (T3), the orthodontists reassessed the radiographs in association with the CT scans. Finally, after 90 days (T4), the evaluation was performed with the same exams. The comparison of the chosen diameter and length of the mini-implants was performed using the Student's t-test. The evaluation of the chosen insertion sites was analyzed by the Wilcoxon test. For both tests, the level of significance was 5%. The kappa concordance test was also performed for the intra- and inter-examiner evaluations. Results: The results of the study showed substantial or perfect intra-examiner and reasonable to perfect inter-examiner agreement. Considering the length and diameter of the mini-implants, no statistical difference was found between the groups. Regarding the insertion site, more than 20% of the treatment plans were changed when the CT scan was associated. Conclusions: The results showed that the association of a CT scan with radiography frequently leads the professional to change the insertion point for the installation of mini-implants. RESUMO

The McCune Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare, multi-system disease composed of the triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of bone (PFDB), café-au-lait skin hyperpigmentation, and endocrine disorders. The diagnosis involves clinical, biochemical and imaging findings, with dentistry playing an important role in MAS, since many patients present DFPO in the craniofacial bones, including the maxilla and mandible, and in view of their dental needs, the correct management of these patients is not only an essential but important area to be investigated. This report presents a case of a patient with McCune Albright Syndrome, the behavior of the disease over a period of 10 years and how imaging exams such as scintigraphy and tomography were important for planning the dental treatment of this patient, since they are fundamental allies for identification and evaluation of the progression and/or stability of the disease. INTRODUCTION: To evaluate, by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), the change in thickness and height of the alveolar bone and interdental septum in the anterior mandible after orthodontic treatment for dental crowding using tooth extraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 48 mandibular incisors from adult patients who presented with Class I malocclusion and required orthodontic treatment with the extraction of mandibular premolars. CBCT images were taken before starting the treatment (T1) and three months after treatment (T2). The following measurements were evaluated: width and height of the alveolar bone and the interdental septum, the distance between the cementoenamel junction and the bone ridges (F-CEJ-MBC and L-CEJ-MBC), as well as the vertical positioning and inclination of the incisor, using the Lingual Plane as the reference point. The paired Student's t-test and Pearson correlation were used with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: A significant increase was observed in the distance L-CEJ-MBC, which shows the appearance of bone dehiscence. The degree of dental crowding was not a risk factor for the development of dehiscence. The decrease in the incisor inclination and intrusion was related to the formation of dehiscence on the lingual surface. CONCLUSION: The variation in the incisor's inclination and intrusion during the treatment of dental crowding using tooth extraction are related to the formation of bone dehiscence on its lingual surface.

Rationale: Multiple Calcifying Hyperplastic Dental Follicle (MCHDF) is an extremely rare condition and is characterised by multiple impacted permanent teeth, with enlarged dental follicles, containing calcifications. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is the ideal exam for the identification of this condition. Patient Concerns: The present study seeks to compare the behaviour of MCHDF in imaging exams of three clinical cases with their MCHDF imaging diagnoses, in which a change about tooth eruption was observed. Diagnosis: CBCT proved to be an important diagnostic tool for MCHDF, as it is able to identify these small calcifications, as well as measure the size of the follicle.Treatment Outcomes and Take. Away Lessons: With a consistent imaging diagnosis, less invasive treatments become a viable option for this condition, since functional and aesthetic involvement is common in these patients, who often tend to be quite young.

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate the accuracy of a computer-assisted system based on artificial intelligence for detecting and identifying dental implant brands using digital periapical radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,800 digital periapical radiographs of dental implants from three distinct manufacturers (f1 = 600, f2 = 600, and f3 = 600) were split into training dataset (n = 1,440 [80%]) and testing dataset (n = 360 [20%]) groups. The images were evaluated by software developed by means of convolutional neural networks (CNN), with the aim of identifying the manufacturer of the dental implants contained in them. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were calculated for detection and diagnostic performance of the CNN algorithm. RESULTS: At the final epoch (25), system accuracy values of 99.78% were obtained for group training data, 99.36% for group testing data, and 85.29% for validation data. The latter value corresponded to the actual accuracy of carrying out the system learning process. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of CNN for identifying dental implant manufacturers, which was proven to be a precise method of great clinical significance.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the anatomic aspects of the maxillary sinus septa, by means of computed tomography images, in a Brazilian population. The results might be of clinical significance in sinus lift surgery planning. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the study, 123 computed tomographs obtained from a private radiology clinic were used. They were analyzed by a single, trained and calibrated observer in order to evaluate the presence, quantity, localizations, dimensions, orientations and different characteristics in dentate, partially edentulous and completely edentulous individuals of the sinus septa. RESULTS: Of the individuals analyzed, 26% had a septum in the maxillary sinus, with 59.6% being classified as complete, 44.2% showed prevalence for the middle region of the maxillary sinus. There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left sides (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients in the sample analyzed presented to septa in the maxillary sinuses, and when septa were present, a higher number of occurrence was noted in the middle region of the maxillary sinus. (This region is normally the choice of sinus lift surgery). There was no predilection relative to age, sex and type of dentition. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate changes of the alveolar bone and interdental bone septum of the mandibular incisors through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) after orthodontic treatment of mandibular dental crowding without dental extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 64 CBCT images (32 pre-treatment and 32 post-treatment) from 32 adult patients with class I malocclusion and an average age of 23.0±3.9 years. The width and height of the alveolar bone and interdental septum, the distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the facial and lingual bone crests, and the inclination of the mandibular incisors were measured. RESULTS: The distance between the CEJ and the marginal bone crest on the facial side increased significantly (P<0.05). An increased distance between the CEJ and the bone crest on the facial and lingual sides showed a correlation with the irregularity index (P<0.05); however, no significant association was observed with increasing mandibular incisor inclination (P>0.05). The change in the distance between the CEJ and the marginal bone crest on the facial side was correlated significantly with bone septum height (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Bone dehiscence developed during the treatment of crowding without extraction only on the incisors' facial side. Increasing proclination of the mandibular incisor was not correlated with bone dehiscence. The degree of dental crowding assessed through the irregularity index was associated with the risk of developing bone dehiscence. The interdental septum reflected facial marginal bone loss in the mandibular incisors.

Objective: To conduct a morphometric evaluation of the incisive canal, adjacent structures, and their anatomic variations in Brazilian individuals.Methods: A retrospective study was conducted using a sample of 157 multislice computed tomography images of adult Brazilian individuals of both sexes (20-96 years). The exam was performed with the RadiAnt DICOM Viewer 4.0.1 (64-bit) software that uses the DICOM PACS standard for visualization of medical and dental images.Results: The values for length and height of the canal, thickness of the palatine bone plate, and latero-lateral diameter of the incisive foramen were higher in men than in women (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated morphometric differences for the following parameters: latero-lateral diameter; width of canals at all levels measured; palatine bone plate height; canal length and palatine bone plate thickness in relation to the male and female sexes in the Brazilian population.

Introduction. Early diagnosis of calcified atheromas may decrease morbidity and mortality caused by brain and cardiovascular diseases, in which atherosclerosis is the main etiological factor of these pathologies. Dental examinations with the aim of detecting this pathology have been in progress since 1981, such as panoramic radiography, considered the most widely studied method for this diagnosis. However, some limitations of this exam have been reported with reference to inability to visualize the cervical region and difficulty of establishing a precise diagnosis because of many structures and calcifications that have similar radiographic characteristics. Case Report. The present study to describe a dental radiographic technique for establishing the differential diagnosis of calcified atheromas regarding other calcifications and reporting 3 clinical cases that demonstrate its effectiveness in different clinical situations. Discussion. Manzi Projection can promote a differential diagnosis of calcified atheromas in dental practice and consequently subsidize the clinician for referring the patient to the physician.

The determination of sex from skeletal remains has been widely used in biological profile reconstruction since these are some of the last structures to perish after death. The sphenoid sinus is located deeply in the skull and is enveloped by diverse structures within the sphenoid body. It is, therefore, less predisposed to injuries and/or pathological changes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possibility of determining sex in a Brazilian population by means of linear and volumetric measurements of the sphenoid sinus, in addition to identifying and quantifying the presence of extensions of this sinus in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. In total 268 CBCT scans were analysed, from patients aged between 22 and 70 years old, of which 145 were female, and 123 were male. The images, representative of a Brazilian population, were selected by a dental radiologist from a CBCT image bank. The volumetric measurements were made by means of the segmentation software ITK-SNAP 3.0® and the linear inferio-superior, latero-lateral and anteroposterior measurements, as well as the presence of extensions of the sphenoidal sinus, were made using the CS Imaging Software®. The results of this study suggested that when comparing men and women, there were no statistical differences in the linear measurements and extensions of the sphenoidal sinus, although the values were considerable in the extensions for the pterygoid processes and greater wings of the sphenoid bone, particularly in women. However, there was a statistically significant difference when the sphenoidal sinus volume was compared, as it was larger for men (11.364 mm³ ± 4.229 mm³) than for women (10.000 mm³ ± 3.615 mm³). In summary, the sphenoidal sinus volumetric measurements in CBCT exams are useful for determining the sex of unknown individuals.

BACKGROUND: Regardless of the kind of biomaterial used for the graft, it is clear that, over time, the graft undergoes dimensional changes that could influence the final bone volume obtained, which could alter the stability of the installed implants. The aim of the present study was to compared and correlated the graft behavior with the amount (in grams) of xenogeneic and alloplastic biomaterials used in grafts for maxillary sinus lift. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used 148 CBCT images of 74 grafts from 68 maxillary sinuses lift patients in a university, post-graduate clinic. The weights of biomaterials, categorized in intervals according to amount used, were correlated with the graft volumes at V1 (10 days) and V2 (180 days). Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate the possible bias effect of weight on graft maintenance. RESULTS: Mean weights of biomaterials used were: Bio-Oss Small® (1.58g); Bio-Oss Large® (1.35g); Endobon® (0.72g); BoneCeramic®+Emdogaim® (0.96g); Cerasorb® (1.13g) and Osteogen® (2.70g). No significant differences (p>0.05). Were found for the influence of these mean amounts in graft maintenance: Bio-Oss Small® (18); Bio-Oss Large® (10); Endobon® (17); BoneCeramic®+Emdogaim® (10); Cerasorb® (11); and Osteogen® (08) at V1 and V2. However, when biomaterials were categorized by intervals, all Cerasorb® interval groups showed statistically significant differences (p<0.001) in graft volume at V2. CONCLUSIONS: The amounts of the biomaterials used could influence the final volume; depending on the biomaterial characteristics. Implant installation was possible with all studied grafts, although graft volume shrinkage should be considered when selecting biomaterial for sinus lift. PURPOSE: In this study, we used ultrasonography to monitor the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) as a filler in the face for esthetic reasons. We monitored changes in the filler shape, distribution, and relationship with adjacent anatomical structures over a 180-day period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two patients each received an ultrasound-guided injection of HA, with different products and application sites for each patient. In 1 patient, the injection was administered in the angle of the mandible, while in the other, it was administered in the zygomatic region. The injection sites were monitored via ultrasonography at 24 hours, 30 days, and 180 days, at which times the imaging characteristics of the filler were observed. All injections were performed by the same professional, as were the ultrasound exams, which were conducted using the same equipment. RESULTS: In both cases, the HA fillers were visualized using ultrasound at all time points. Some differences were observed between the cases in the images and the distribution of the pockets of filler. In 1 case, the filler appeared as a dark hypoechoic region with well-defined contours, and the material was observed to have moved posteriorly by the 180-day mark. In the other case, the material appeared hyperechoic relative to the previous case and presented no noticeable changes in its anteroposterior distribution over time. CONCLUSION: Based on these 2 cases, ultrasonography can be a complementary tool used to monitor facial fillers over the long term, allowing for the dynamic observation of different fillers.

PURPOSE: To apply finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the stress distribution in a 4-mm-high ultrashort implant when supporting crowns of different heights in order to test the possibility of using this implant unitarily in the posterior edentulous mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three models of atrophic mandibles were created (M1, M2, and M3). Each model contained a 4-mm-length implant of a titanium-zirconium alloy, screw-type with internal connection, supporting nonsplinted screwed-in crowns of 10, 12.5, and 15 mm in height. Axial and oblique loads were simulated in the three model crowns. RESULTS: In an oblique load, the stress tended to be concentrated in the lingual region. In the qualitative results of the axial load, peaks of tension occurred in the lower angle between the inner groove and the inner conical portion of the implant. Regarding the differences in crown height, the 15-mm height produced a higher stress peak due to the lever effect of the crown under an oblique load. CONCLUSION: Within the limits of this study, the results suggest the possibility of using single crowns of proposed heights with unitary ultrashort implants installed in the posterior edentulous mandible, so long as there is no oblique load on the crown.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the external apical root resorption in the lower incisors after orthodontic alignment and leveling using digital periapical radiographs. The sample consisted of periapical radiographs of 90 lower central incisors from 45 patients, 19 men and 26 women aged 12-36 years (mean 22.7 years). All the 90 lower central incisors were performed periapical radiographs in two phases: 1 - initial before orthodontic treatment and 2 - after alignment and dental leveling phase. The initial periapical radiographs were digitized through a transparency scanner. All patients were treated by the same orthodontist, the inclusion criteria were: never having been treated orthodontically; absence of exodontia, agenesis, malformation or defect in teeth, supernumerary teeth, endodontic treatment and impacted incisors. The time interval between the initial and post-leveling radiographs was from 6 to 12 months, with an average time of 9 months. It was observed that 47.8% of the incisors evaluated presented external apical root resorption, being most grade 1 (irregular contour up to 1 mm reabsorption). There was a positive association of external root resorption with the triangular root shape. There was no association between the severity of root resorption and the type of malocclusion. An association was observed between age and resorption severity, that is, patients who have already reached bone maturation were more likely to develop apical external root resorption. Female patients were more likely, but when men developed external root resorption, it tended to be a more severe degree. Female adult patients, with a triangular root shape, anatomical apical pipette shape, regardless of malocclusion type are more likely to develop apical external root resorption in orthodontic treatment. Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a reabsorção radicular apical externa nos incisivos inferiores após alinhamento e nivelamento ortodôntico com radiografias periapicais digitais. A amostra consistiu de 90 radiografias periapicais de incisivos centrais inferiores de 45 pacientes, sendo 19 homens e 26 mulheres com idade entre 12 e 36 anos (média de 22,7 anos). As radiografias periapicais foram realizadas em dois momentos: 1 - inicial antes do tratamento ortodôntico e 2 - após fase de alinhamento e nivelamento dentário. Todas as radiografias foram digitalizadas através de um scanner de transparência. Todos os pacientes foram tratados pelo mesmo ortodontista e preenchiam os seguintes critérios de inclusão: não ter sido tratado ortodonticamente anteriormente; ausência de exodontia, agenesia, malformação ou defeito nos dentes, dentes supranumerários, tratamento endodôntico e incisivos impactados. O intervalo de tempo entre as radiografias inicial e pós-nivelamento foi de 6 a 12 meses, com tempo médio de 9 meses. Observou-se que 47,8% dos incisivos avaliados apresentaram reabsorção radicular apical externa, sendo a maioria de grau 1 (contorno irregular até reabsorção de 1 mm). Houve associação positiva da reabsorção radicular externa com a forma da raiz triangular. Não houve associação entre a gravidade da reabsorção radicular e o tipo de má oclusão. Observou-se associação entre idade e gravidade da reabsorção, ou seja, pacientes que já atingiram a maturação óssea apresentaram maior chance de desenvolver reabsorção radicular externa apical. Pacientes do sexo feminino foram mais frequentes, mas quando os homens desenvolveram reabsorção radicular externa, tenderam a ser mais graves. Um paciente adulto, do sexo feminino, com formato de raiz triangular, região apical na forma anatômica de pipeta, independentemente do tipo de má oclusão, tem maior probabilidade de desenvolver reabsorção radicular externa no tratamento ortodôntico. OBJECTIVE: The present controlled clinical pilot study proposed to assess blood clot contraction and bone neo-formation following maxillary sinus lift (MSL) with immediate implant placement without using grafts using cone beam tomography exams. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten implants were placed in ten patients with a residual bone crest height ≥4 and ≤ 7 mm, in maxillary premolars or 1st or 2nd molars regions, using MSL and immediate implant placement without grafts, by means of the lateral window approach. A resorbable membrane (Bio-Gide®, Geistlich, USA) was used to close the window. Computed tomography images were taken after 15 (T1) and 180 (T2) days to assess the rate of blood clot contraction and bone neo-formation. The images were analysed by OsirixMD software. The Shapiro Wilk test was used to verify the normality hypothesis and the data were submitted to Student's paired t-test. RESULTS: The mean of bone clot height in mesial, apical and distal area referred to implant, presented 4.77 mm, 0.77 mm and 5.30 mm respectively. The mean measurements of new bone formation presented 2.95 mm, 0.44 mm and 3.45 mm. The height contraction (coagulum/new bone formation), between T1 and T2, presented 38%, 43% and 35% respectively, with a significant statistical value p < 0.05. The volume measurements at T1 presented a mean volume of 0.90 cm3 sd ± 0.60 cm3 and at T2 a mean volume of 0.75 cm3 sd ± 0.62 cm3, with a significant volume contraction between T1 and T2, p < 0.005. The mean blood clot contraction was 16.52% ± 8.60%. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrates consistent bone formation around all assessed implants, although with significant contraction of the blood clot. The need for longitudinal studies to establish a long-term prognosis in different modalities of prosthetic rehabilitation of those implants is strongly suggested.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to introduce a novel method to evaluate the alveolar bone and interdental septum in the anterior mandible using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six CBCT scans from adult patients were selected. The CBCT scans were obtained before and after orthodontic treatment. The following measurements were taken: width of the alveolar bone and the interdental septum, height of the interdental septum, height of the bone plates, distance between the cementoenamel junction and marginal bone crests, and vertical positioning of the mandibular incisor, using the lingual plane as a reference. To test the reproducibility and the stability of the lingual plane, a triangle was traced in the anterior mandible. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to determine intra- and inter-examiner agreement. The paired Student t-test was used to evaluate the area of the triangle and the reproducibility of all measurements. RESULTS: The ICC was excellent for the alveolar bone and dental measurements (0.9989 and 0.9977, respectively), as well as for the interdental septum (0.9987 and 0.9961, respectively). The area of the triangles showed stability in the lingual plane (P>0.05). For the alveolar bone, mandibular incisor, and interdental septum measurements, no statistically significant differences were found between the 2 examiners (P>0.05), confirming the technical reliability of the measurements. CONCLUSION: The method used in this study provides a valid and reproducible assessment of alveolar bone dimensions in the anterior mandible measured on CBCT images.

Abstract Introduction: Imaging studies have hystorically been used to support the clinical otorhinolaryngological evaluation of the upper respiratory tract for the diagnosis of obstructive causes of oral breathing. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare 3D volumetric measurements of nasal cavity, nasopharynx and oropharynx of obstructed mouth-breathing children with measurements of non-obstructed mouth-breathing children. Methods: This retrospective study included 25 mouth-breathing children aged 5-9 years evaluated by otorhinolaryngological clinical examination, flexible nasoendoscopy and full-head multi-slice computed tomography. Tomographic volumetric measurements and dichotomic otorhinolaryngological diagnosis (obstructed vs. non-obstructed) in three anatomical regions (the nasal cavity, nasopharynx and oropharynx) were compared and correlated. An independent sample t-test was used to assess the association between the 3D measurements of the upper airways and the otorhinolaryngological diagnosis of obstruction in the three anatomical regions. Inter- and intra-observer intraclass correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the reliability of the 3D measurements. Results: The intra-class correlation coefficients ranged from 0.97 to 0.99. An association was found between turbinate hypertrophy and nasal cavity volume reduction (p < 0.05) and between adenoid hyperplasia and nasopharynx volume reduction (p < 0.001). No association was found between palatine tonsil hyperplasia and oropharynx volume reduction. Conclusions: (1) The nasal cavity volume was reduced when hypertrophic turbinates were diagnosed; (2) the nasopharynx was reduced when adenoid hyperplasia was diagnosed; and (3) the oropharynx volume of mouth-breathing children with tonsil hyperplasia was similar to that of non-obstructed mouth-breathing children. The adoption of the actual anatomy of the various compartments of the upper airway is an improvement to the evaluation method.


Resumo Introdução: O exame clínico otorrinolaringológico da via aérea superior tem sido historicamente feito com a ajuda de imagens radiográficas para diagnosticar causas obstrutivas da respiração bucal. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar as medidas volumétricas em 3D da cavidade nasal, nasofaringe e orofaringe entre crianças com respiração bucal e obstrução respiratória e crianças respiradoras bucais sem obstrução respiratória. Método: Estudo retrospectivo que inclui 25 crianças respiradoras bucais de 5 a 9 anos. As crianças foram avaliadas por exame clínico otorrinolaringológico, nasofibroscopia flexível e tomografia computadorizada multi-slice. Medidas volumétricas obtidas tomograficamente de três regiões anatômicas (cavidade nasal, nasofaringe e orofaringe) foram correlacionadas e comparadas com diagnóstico dicotômico otorrinolaringológico (obstruído vs. não obstruído). Um teste t de amostra independente foi usado para avaliar a associação entre as medidas em 3D das vias aéreas superiores e o diagnóstico otorrinolaringológico de obstrução nas três regiões anatômicas. Os coeficientes de correlação intraclasse inter e intraobservador foram usados para avaliar a confiabilidade das medidas em 3D. Resultados: O coeficiente de correlação intraclasse variou de 0,97 a 0,99. Uma associação foi encontrada entre a hipertrofia de conchas e a redução do volume da cavidade nasal (p < 0,05) e entre a hiperplasia de tonsila faríngea e a redução do volume da nasofaringe (p < 0,001). Não foi encontrada associação entre a hiperplasia da tonsila palatina e a redução do volume da orofaringe. Conclusões: 1) O volume da cavidade nasal estava reduzido nas crianças com diagnóstico de hipertrofia de conchas; 2) O volume da nasofaringe estava reduzido nas crianças com diagnóstico de hiperplasia de tonsila faríngea; e 3) O volume da orofaringe de crianças com respiração bucal e hiperplasia de tonsila palatina foi semelhante ao de crianças respiradoras bucais sem aumento da tonsila palatina. A adoção da mensuração anatômica dos vários compartimentos da via aérea superior complementa o método de avaliação.
